There is something about old things that I love. Vintage egg beaters, enamel ware, grandma's quilts, rustic doors, wicker chairs, antique books and globes. *sigh*. Perhaps its the memories of afternoon tea parties at my Auntie Mae's house in the country. Drinking tea from china cups and pumping away at the ancient pedals of her pianola. Or holidays at my Nana's house where we slept in old wrought iron beds in the sleepout and and ate roast dinners cooked to perfection in her Aga stove.
So it was with excitement that I headed out the door to a local community garage sale on Saturday morning with family in tow. That's right, all 8 of us. :) Hubby was persuaded by the the promise of an early morning caramel latte from Gloria Jeans, and the kids were happy to tag along buoyed by the hope of spending their pocket money. Even the sun was shining.
We pulled up by the roadside and I spied my first treasure even before hubby had switched off the engine. :) While he and the kids ambled over to pat the jersey cows leaning over the fence (I know, right? Where was their commitment to the hunt for vintage ware???) I
True to my word we drove on towards the promise of a caramel latte, with the vintage bed safely secured to our Land Cruiser's roof racks. Warmed by his coffee, hubby was happy to visit the local op shop where I'd spied a 70's style bike earlier that week. This time it was C's turn to flip her lid! With the grand total of $6 paid to the teller she was proud owner of a red classic cruiser, complete with rusted chrome and flat tyres. Once it was tied to the roof racks (on top of the vintage bed) she actually leapt in the air. I kid you not. Joy of joys, the blood of vintage love runs thick through her veins :)
Once home we unloaded our treasures and set to. The bed looks divine in Miss G's loft room, at home amongst her collection of vintage Enid Blyton books. Miss C began her bike restoration, which defied all our expectations and took less than an hour. She applied WD40 to the rusted chain, pumped up the flat tyres which turned out NOT to have punctures, scrubbed away at the rusted chrome with aluminum foil(try it - you'll be amazed) until it actually shone, and attached a basket to the handlebars. *Love* I've actually ridden it and its divine! The high handlebars and seat mean you sit up straight like Mary Poppins and feel like a true lady. :) The absolute best thing though is watching Miss C ride about the yard on it, wide grin spread across her face.
That is truly FANTASTIC...the bike I mean! Love it! Good job to Miss C! :) Love the books, I really need to do a post on ALL the books I have found and ordered for next year! I've nearly got all the books I want for Joshua and Grace. Joshua is going into AO4 and Gracie is AO2 next year. I combine our history, geography, science, art, folksongs, nature books and devotions together and try to read as many free reading books from the lists to both from their year. I'm learning more and more as the year goes by, and I'm feeling even more confident for 2012. Jeanne has been an amazing help to us Australian AOers, and has really built a road into how to Australianise AO. I am so grateful for that, and for you too and your incredible inspiration and love for history and art permeates through your blog...thank you Mel! xxx
ReplyDeleteThanks Sarah! I've just been reading through the FAQ on the AO website and gleaning some more understanding. Feeling excited too. I alos love the booklists, and have many of the titles...just need to order a few more, which is fun in itself!
ReplyDeleteI will tell C that you love her bike.

I love old books and have quite a collection - I love to rescue them and given them a loving home. I think a row of old books always gives a bookshelf character!!
ReplyDeleteBlessings
Hi Joluise, thanks for dropping by. :) I agree with you about rescuing old books - one of my favourite hobbies! Mel.
ReplyDeleteI also remember sleeping in those type beds at Grandmas! It looks terrific. And the bike is just like the ones we had. Yes, we sat upright but they were super, weren't they?!!!
ReplyDeleteYOur posts always look so warm and homey. Love that style...particularly as I have no style :-(
I can see why you are gushing over these - wow! Just gorgeous xo
ReplyDeleteHaha! Ruby you made me laugh out loud...again! You HAVE style girl! Not many of us sit on chairs propped up with Shakespeare :) That takes class. Mel xx
ReplyDeleteJo, yes great finds hey! I especially love the bed - it's so high and just perfect for Miss G. Hope you are enjoying the wind down to the end of the year... Mel xx
ReplyDeleteHey girls you can visit Miss C's blog and leave her a comment if you wish. You'll find more pics of her bike and be able to read her take on op shopping. Just click on the link in my side bar for Girl in Gumboots. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteOh class...yeah, right!
ReplyDeleteI love vintage finds too! ♥ Nice bike ♥
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and leaving a comment on our guinea pigs ☺
What a lovely bike! I have one that's almost the same .. but blue. I'm going to have to try that alfoil trick. Oh and I love that basket too. Too cute!!
ReplyDeleteAnd don't old books just smell ... full of adventure. I loved reading my Mum's old hardbacks, esp. the 1950s girls annuals. I love how the paper sounds when you turn a page, too. They just don't make books like that anymore. :(
Oh Mel!!! I thought I had posted about your vintage finds but something went wrong and it didn't end up working...not sure what happened.
ReplyDeleteAnyway I must say I was soooo excited by your finds and I found myself holding my breath reading all about it...wondering if you got that bed in time before someone snatched it and you did!! It sounded so much like me...I felt as though I was there too. In fact, Mr PTF laughed when he read it and said..."mmm sounds very familiar..." I wonder what he meant...? Haha! Well done J...strapping it onto the car and that gorgeous red bike too...takes a real man! (Are you listening Mr PTF?! Just kidding, you have been very gracious about all my latest 'finds' too) Now all you need Mel, are some vintage doors for trestle tables....but maybe J will need a bit more than a caramel latte to come around to that idea?! Haha! Love the red bike C! I can just picture you riding around like Mary Poppins...love it!
Ahh the joys of vintage bargains! Well done!
